In spite of is a prepositional phrase used to show that things are not as expected. It has a similar meaning as the conjunctions although and but. However, as a prepositional phrase, the sentences are formed differently.

Formation
1. in spite of + noun
ex. We took a walk in spite of the storm.
2. in spite of + gerund (~ing form of a verb)
