In spite of is a prepositional phrase used to show that things are not as expected. It has a similar meaning as the conjunctions although and but. However, as a prepositional phrase, the sentences are formed differently.

1. in spite of + noun
ex. We took a walk in spite of the storm.
2. in spite of + gerund (~ing form of a verb)
ex. In spite of sleeping for eight hours, I feel tired.
In spite of cannot be followed by that. Instead, the following form can be used. However, although is simpler and more common:
3. In spite of + the fact that …
ex. In spite of the fact that I forgot my bank card, I had enough money.
